dominican republic
This fall, we will be headed to the Dominican Republic with Convoy of Hope! The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti and is susceptible to natural disasters and recurrent shocks. The country has experienced economic decline, perpetuating hunger and food insecurity — poverty affects more than 20% of the population. With the majority living in urban areas, 63% of low-income families are led by women. Food insecurity is caused by a weak agricultural structure and a lack of diverse diets. Limited access to healthy food also contributes to a high rate of anemia among children.
In 2022, through partnership, Convoy of Hope launched Children’s Feeding in the Dominican Republic, providing regular, nutritious meals in schools. These nutrient-enriched meals address malnutrition and anemia for children in this context. Convoy of Hope has also implemented agriculture programming in the Dominican Republic in an effort to
create long-term food security and sustainability. Convoy requires all Field Team participants to be 18 & up.

puerto rico
Convoy of Hope’s work in Puerto Rico started with the disaster response to Hurricane Maria in 2017. Following the initial relief efforts of Convoy’s Disaster Services team, Field Teams began rehabilitation efforts — helping communities and churches work toward long-term sustainability. We moved from rehabilitation to partnering closely with local churches, and we recently had a Church Engagement training where several pastors from across the island learned best practices for impacting their communities. Convoy of Hope works with local churches and ministries across Puerto Rico, helping children, senior citizens, the marginalized, the unhoused, schools, and more.
Your team will walk forward with local people and church leaders to fight against poverty and hopelessness. Your project is still being strategized, but you might assist in a wide variety of ways, including construction, community development, and relational ministry to both under-resourced and marginalized community members. Each opportunity will be somewhat different depending on your team and the current needs on the ground. Your team’s specific project and location will be identified and communicated closer to your trip. And, of course, your team will also explore places rich with history and a fascinating culture.

Guatemala
Guatemala has one of the highest rates of stunting in the world, with nearly half of all children under 5 chronically malnourished. With preexisting challenges of high poverty rates, malnutrition, and severe weather and natural disasters, the people of Guatemala experience significant economic and physical challenges.
Convoy of Hope has a strong history with Guatemala due to our response to natural disasters. Through partnership, Convoy began ongoing program activities in the country in 2019. By establishing the Children’s Feeding, Women’s Empowerment, and Agriculture initiatives, Convoy has directly addressed malnutrition and generational poverty. Convoy of Hope has also helped unravel the roots of food insecurity through empowerment and training programs that focus on long-term sustainability and both economic and family health.
